This is an article I wish I had written. So I checked it very carefully to make sure that it contains everything parents would want to tell their children about fires. It is a complete "how to" manual on fire prevention and what to do when there is a fire. If you and your family (or others you share a space with) think about and discuss these things, what has happened to more than 40 unprepared people will not happen to you. Children and Fire Safety - Talking to Your Child

One of the most important things you can ever discuss with your child is fire safety. It is important that you begin talking about this topic, even when kids are young. Even little children can end up causing a fire if they are not instructed on the dangers of fire and proper fire safety. Here is a look at the importance of talking to your child and some important information, considerations, and tips that can help you with this important conversation.

Why This is Significant

You may be wondering why it is so important to discuss fire safety, even with your young children. Well, statistics show that there are close to 1000 children that die each year under the age of 14 in fires that occur at home. Thousands of kids end up being injured in home fires. In fact, many fires are accidentally set by kids. Kids that are under the age of 10 actually account for about 70% of deaths in home fires. This is serious business and talking to your child about fire safety could one day save their life.

Considerations to Remember When Talking to Your Child
Of course, when teaching your child about fire safety, you need to choose material that is age appropriate and it needs to be engaging and interesting to them as well. You can easily get online and find crossword puzzles, pictures for coloring, quizzes, and other games that you can use when teaching your kids about fire safety. You may be able to take your kids to the fire department in your area to help them learn more about fire safety from fire heroes.

Preventing Fires From Occurring

It is definitely important that you teach kids about fire safety so they can prevent fires and prevent injuries and fatalities from occurring. Make sure that you set the example as well by practicing fire safety. Get kids involved in tasks within the home to prevent fires, such as looking at the expiration dates on fire extinguishers or checking out the batteries in the smoke alarms. Never leave any fires unattended in your home as well. You can teach your kids about fire safety by teaching them about hazards in the home. Let them know about hazards like the stove, a fireplace, or extension cords that are overloaded. Practice escaping your home and having fire drills as well and make sure kids know how to get out of a home properly to avoid inhaling smoke.

An Important Warning to Remember

While you can teach kids about fire alarms, remember that kids often sleep very heavy at night. Never think that the alarm alone is going to wake up your child. Try out the alarm to see if it does wake your child up. If it doesn't, remember to go check on your kids if a fire does occur. Another warning is to remember that even small kids can end up starting fires. Teach kids that they should never use lighters or matches and that they should let an adult know if a fire occurs.
